Opened in February 2020, Makkari Base [styled as 真狩BASE] is a unique cafe in the nearby town of Makkari. Set up in a shipping container, it offers a calming space to enjoy fresh coffee, delicious breakfast and authentic pasta just 20 minutes from Niseko by car. The container is decorated with wooden furnishings and plants for a scandi-inspired design, and a new, chic location for locals and travellers to come together over great food.

The Menu: Nagoya Style Breakfast, Coffee and Pasta Lunch

Makkari base is open all day, customers can enjoy a special kind of breakfast in the mornings: Nagoya-style. The concept is simple - order a cup of coffee, and receive a light yet filling breakfast for the perfect start to the day. Typical of most cafes in Nagoya, when you order coffee you can receive a plate with toast and sides like boiled eggs, salad, sausages, anko (sweet red bean paste) and more. The food will usually be included in the coffee price, or it will be a small extra fee. At Makkari Base you can get toast, salad and a boiled egg included with a cup of coffee (so cheap!) or if you're hungrier, you can choose an add on like sausages and potatoes for only ¥350.

Nagoya-style breakfasts make for a simple breakfast with great value for money, and Makkari Base is one of the first to do it in the Niseko area. If you prefer a sweeter breakfast, french toast is also available (breakfast served from 7am - 11am).

Throughout the day you can of course enjoy fresh coffee like a latte, americano, or decaf. Orange and apple juice is also available, as well as soy milk for those who don't like dairy.

After 11am the menu changes to a series of delicious pasta dishes, including gorgonzola and cream, pesto and chicken, aglio e olio with local vegetables and pork bolognese, which are available until 5pm.

The Cafe: Simple yet Chic with a fabulous view

Makkari Base was started by Vacation Niseko's night manager Takao Yamamoto and his partner, who welcome customers with a smile, often with their adorable daughter Julie at the hip. Like many cafes in the Niseko area, Makkari Base has become a great place for locals to enjoy time out with a coffee and mingle with their community, as well as a cute destination for tourists to enjoy the easygoing vibe of Makkari town.

When you enter the cafe, you immediately feel relaxed, with lofi hip hop music, the gentle chatter of regulars and the sound of birds from outside floating throughout the converted shipping container. As you eat you can enjoy the simple wooden furnishings or comfortable lounge space with a picture-perfect view of Mt Yotei in the distance.

According to our staff who have visited Makkari Base for breakfast and lunch, it's a great spot to check out with delicious food, wonderful coffee and reasonable prices. Consider coming to Makkari on your way to Niseko for a pit stop at this new and cosy cafe.
