Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is a watersport that has recently exploded in popularity. Why? It’s very intuitive, easy to learn, provides a new perspective for exploring the water, and most importantly, it’s a lot of fun! One of the most popular areas in Niseko to SUP is in Lake Toya with its clear water, beautiful scenery, and mild water temperature. It’s also possible to SUP in the Shiribetsu river (recommended in summer and autumn since the water speed in spring can be very fast) and the ocean coves around Hokkaido like Shakotan.

Standup paddleboards for beginners are inflatable. This means losing your balance and falling in the water is relatively harmless. Riding a SUP is relaxing and the perfect green season activity for families. Some people even take their dogs on their boards with them for some companionship on the water!

Dates of operation: early June – late October, 2025
