Kutchan Jaga Matsuri!

The highlight of the Kutchan Jaga Festival is arguably the parade. (Nebuta are the most vibrant floats - "nebuta" means sleepiness or spirit of sleepiness. It is important to exorcise these before the hard work of the harvest!)

The Kutchan Jaga Matsuri, or Potato Festival, celebrates the harvest season for the iconic local starchy tuber. While the vegetable may seem mundane, it is a staple of the local economy and a nutritious tasty one at that!

For 2 days, local vendors, food stalls, beer gardens and various games of luck and skill line the festival area and streets. There is a definitive potato theme throughout!

No summer festival in Japan is complete without arts and entertainment! From traditional local summer dances to displays of hip hop culture and other ways to move your body to music, the Jaga Matsuri does not disappoint. Local schools, clubs, and organizations also contribute to the cultural bounty.
