Special Event Nights at Mountain Lights and Fire Goddess Performance

Imagine the sound of the Ainu Mukkuri, a plucked stringed instrument that uses the mouth as a resonating chamber, echoing through the Hanazono Hills. Two dancers wields fiery swords. Hypnotically twirling and lunging at each other to the sound as fireworks explode in the night sky. Colourful native prints adorn their body as they proceed through the Fire Goddess Performance on this special night.

Overall

anticipation is building for the return to Japan of work by internationally acclaimed visual artist Bruce Munro. While each work is site-specific and unique, they are clear variations on the theme of using light on a grand, environmental scale to spark an emotional response from the participant.

Sparking an emotional response is an apt descriptor for the "fireflies" of light that will carpet the slopes of the Hanazono resort. The mountain light path installation, "Arrow Spring", is a 1300 meter long installation in harmony with the natural surroundings and existing resort facilities. It allows participants to use the Symphony Gondola to oversee the installation. With 180,000 individual points of light, these fireflies enhance the nighttime experience of summer in Niseko.

Fire and our relationship with fire is also explored with the installation.

Whatever the intent of the artist, you are free to experience the installation and reflect on your relationship with art, nature, fire and summertime.

Runs at Hanazono from July 1st, 2024 until October 6th, 2024. See it while you can!
