The Sapporo Snow Festival started in 1950 as an humble event, in which some local high school students displayed their sculptures at Odori Park. This was a common activity for the locals in Hokkaido, thanks to the heavy snowfall in winter. It has evolved as a major winter event in Sapporo over the years, attracting over 2 millions of visiotrs from Japan and overseas.
A wide array of large and small sculptures are showcased in Odori Park, totalling 1.5 km between 1-chome and 12-chome. In addition to local entry, international participants also take part in this great winter event. Their works are exhibited at the 11-chome site. The Sapporo Snow Festival is a great winter event that everyone should join.
