Bifue Pass remains closed
Please note: This article is old and the below highway access has been re-opened and damage repaired.
Sections of National Highways 453 and 276 running between the New Chitose Airport and Niseko remain closed following an avalanche and rockslide on Bifue Pass.
The slide, which was first observed around 3:10 am on March 15th, buried the road in snow, rock and fallen trees with a debris field some 2.5 meters in height and 9 meters wide. The slide is believed to have been caused by a natural avalanche, one that took with it substantial amounts of debris.
The reopening date of National Highways 453 and 276 & of Bifue Pass remain unknown. Travelers to Niseko are advised to take alternative routes until the road is confirmed clear.
